Who ButterflyDreaming is for — and how to be part of it
ButterflyDreaming is designed for anyone who wants to think alongside a stranger — to explore meaning through shared symbols in a space free from social pressure, performance, and personal branding.
It is particularly suited to:
People who want the kind of conversation that is harder to have with friends or family — open, exploratory, untethered from prior relationship dynamics.
A small group sharing a device can participate together — a classroom, a therapy circle, a reading group, a studio. The "user" is the device session, not a named individual.
Schools, universities, and adult education settings exploring philosophical discussion, creative writing, empathy development, or media literacy.
Organisations interested in hosting or curating symbolic text collections, or embedding ButterflyDreaming nodes into their own digital environments.
Those interested in human-AI interaction, dyadic communication, symbolic cognition, reflective wellbeing, or network emergence in cultural systems.
Developers, designers, and technologists who want to contribute to an open, non-commercial platform built on values rather than engagement metrics.
You arrive. The field opens. There are fragments here — short texts from poetry, myth, folktale, philosophy — organised in loose thematic clusters. You can wander through them, follow a thread, or let the AI guide suggest something unexpected. The pace is your own.
At some point, another person arrives. The system pairs you quietly. Subtle cues begin to show you where your browsing trails overlap — where your symbolic orbits are moving close. You are not forced toward any particular fragment. The encounter finds its own shape.
Eventually, something feels right to bring forward. You offer a node. They offer one too. You agree together on two parents. You write something new — short, symbolic, honest — that captures something of what passed between you. You both approve it. It saves.
It becomes part of the field. A future stranger may find it.
Your anonymity is absolute within the platform. No username, no account, no profile. Your session is temporary and unlinked to any personal data. Nothing you write during wandering is stored unless you choose to weave and save a child node.
Saved child nodes are copyright-free and permanently public. Before saving, you will have read and approved the final text — nothing is published without your explicit, active consent.
Moderation operates through layered text screening, not identity monitoring. If a conversation becomes uncomfortable, you can end the session at any time without explanation. There are no penalties and no records.
The platform is designed to be child-safe. All content generated by a user is screened before onward transmission. The symbolic field contains only public-domain texts drawn from poetry, myth, folktale, and philosophy — carefully curated for quality and appropriateness.
Seed nodes are drawn from public-domain sources — texts that have passed into the cultural commons and can be freely shared, combined, and transformed. Sources include:
Fragments are selected for their metaphorical richness — their capacity to absorb projection, invite interpretation, and resist closure of meaning. They function as what the Jungian tradition calls amplification material: symbols that expand rather than narrow as they are explored.
Child nodes created by dyads become part of the field over time. The symbolic commons is not static — it grows from every encounter.
Every node in the Text-Graph is publicly readable via a permanent URL without login or barrier. External websites, archives, educators, and cultural platforms may link freely to individual nodes or to the symbolic field as a whole.
Nodes may be embedded in educational materials, cited in research, or incorporated into other digital environments. They carry no copyright restriction.
Reading is open to the world. Writing requires being inside the dyadic encounter.
Help within the platform is integrated directly with the AI modulator. Rather than navigating documentation, you can simply ask the guide for help at any point in the session. The guide can explain how the encounter works, clarify what a particular symbolic fragment means, suggest directions, or simply be present if you want to think out loud before your partner arrives.
There are a small number of interface buttons for common actions — Offer, Accept, Weave, Approve — but the experience is designed to feel supported rather than mechanical. If you are unsure what to do, ask.
If at any point a dyadic session becomes uncomfortable or distressing, you can close the session immediately. There is no obligation to explain, no penalty, no record. The modulator is also able to provide gentle grounding if either participant signals distress during a session.
The platform is not a substitute for professional therapeutic support. If you are going through a difficult time, please also speak with someone you trust or contact a professional service.
ButterflyDreaming is a non-commercial project. Its symbolic field belongs to no one. Its design is guided by values — reflective wellbeing, radical anonymity, gift-forward creation — rather than by revenue targets.
If you are interested in contributing — whether through curating seed texts, technical development, research collaboration, educational partnership, or simply participating and sharing what you find — the project welcomes that engagement. Get in touch directly: wrcstewart@yahoo.co.uk
Sustaining and developing ButterflyDreaming depends on donations from people who find value in what it is trying to do.
Our favoured option at present is fiscal hosting through The Social Change Nest — a UK-based Community Interest Company that holds funds on behalf of community projects, managing financial administration while keeping all transactions publicly visible via the Open Collective platform. Under this arrangement, every donation received and every expense paid would be visible to anyone, so contributors can satisfy themselves that money is being spent in line with the project's purpose.
We have not yet formally established this arrangement and welcome comments and questions below.
Creative and philosophical direction rests with the project founders. ButterflyDreaming has a specific vision — non-commercial, radically anonymous, gift-forward — and maintaining the integrity of that vision requires clear stewardship. The mission is stated openly on this site and all expenditure must demonstrably serve it.
This is not a closed project. Donors and contributors are genuinely listened to. All comments on this site are read carefully and taken seriously in design decisions, even when they cannot always be acted on. Periodically we will post updates on progress, finances, and upcoming decisions and invite responses. If you have thoughts about the direction of the project, the contact details above are a real route in.
ButterflyDreaming is currently at the founder stage. We are actively seeking advisors, collaborators, and contributors as the platform develops — in areas including platform design, symbolic content curation, therapeutic practice, and technical development. If any of these areas resonate with you, please get in touch.
